Sustainable construction is one of the key areas of development of the construction industry in Kazakhstan. Global climate challenges, population growth and increasing environmental pressures are encouraging more and more companies to pay attention to the environmental, social and corporate aspects of their activities.
These issues are particularly relevant in the context of Kazakhstan’s ambitious goals to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. The construction sector, which accounts for more than 20% of global co₂ emissions, plays an important role in this process.
In this regard, Kazakhstan Housing Company JSC, as a single housing construction operator, conducted a survey of the level of involvement of construction companies in the ESG agenda. 33 companies participated in the survey.
Survey results indicated:
- Overall commitment to ESG principles:
Companies actively use sustainable development tools, such as obtaining green certificates, creating an inclusive environment, and introducing mandatory reporting. However, there is potential for improvement.
- Knowledge of the principles of sustainable development:
52% of the participants are aware of the principles of sustainable development and their importance for their activities.
36% of respondents are not familiar with the ESG agenda, which indicates the need to raise awareness.
12% of the participants refrained from answering, which may indicate a lack of understanding of the principles.
- Application of environmental practices:
The average rate of positive responses on environmental issues was 45%. This indicates the need for active implementation of environmental practices.:
- use of environmentally friendly materials,
- reducing the carbon footprint,
- application of energy-efficient technologies,
- support for “green” construction.
- Social responsibility:
77% of respondents participate in social initiatives, including:
- creating an inclusive environment,
- providing affordable housing,
- respect for workers’ rights.
Social responsibility is a strong point of developers within the framework of the ESG agenda.
- Compliance with the principles of corporate governance:
More than 60% of the participants are ready to implement the principles of transparency, accountability and effective governance. This indicates a high level of awareness of the importance of corporate ethics and management standards for achieving sustainable development.
The survey results show positive dynamics in the field of social responsibility and corporate governance. At the same time, there are significant opportunities for improvement in the field of ecology, where developers need to actively implement environmental practices.
